Shoulder pain is very common and will affect most people at some stage in their lives. The number one cause is Shoulder Impingement.
So what exactly is this? The Humerus or ‘Upper Arm Bone’ is held on by ‘The Rotator Cuff’, and this is made up of four muscles, Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, Teres Minor, and Subscapularis. The prime culprit is Supraspinatus and this often gets caught or impinged between two bones. The tendon of this muscle will become inflamed and this will cause further impingement which equals more pain! Patients will often complain that they can’t lift their arm up beyond 90 degrees without pain, or have difficulty putting a shirt on, or lifting a kettle. Sleeping can often be more painful and lying on the affected side near impossible.
The good news is that in most cases this can be treated effectively by your Osteopath. Fortunately there are only a few occasions when treatment won’t help and these are often due to Tendon Ruptures, Tears and degeneration.
